Some common tree diseases to watch out for

Have you noticed a tree in your garden dying? Are the leaves changing colour or are the branches dying back? Are the trees looking different to their normal apperance?

If so don't wory, it may not be the worst case senario. During late spring/early summer, after the leaves have emerged, various diseases affect trees and shrubs. Before action is taken it is important to know the problem. Below are just a few common problems to help you if you are concerned about your tree's health.

Leaf Curl of Poplar- Taphrina populina

This disease affects the Hybrid Black Poplar (Populus x euramericana). The disease is caused by a fungus and results in the leaves turning brown in colour, giving the apperance of a partially or totally dead tree. Outbreaks often follow a cool, wet spring. This is not a fatal disease but one to watch out for.

Silver Leaf- Chondrostereum purpureum

This is a disease which affects cherry trees. The leaves appear pale in colour and with a silvery look to them compared to a healthy leaf. It can cause whole branches to die-back and in extreme cases the death of the tree.

Fireblight- Erwinia amylovora

This is a disease common on Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) and Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia). The leaves and tips of branches turn black/brown in colour and give the apperance as if the tree had been scorched by fire. This disease is potentialy fatal.

Anthracnose of Weeping Willow- Drepanopeziza sphaeroides

This is a disease which affects the leaves and shoots of the Weeping Willow (Salix x chryrsocoma). The leaves become twisted and may fall off. This can affect the growth habit.
